"This is the way I obtained the matchbook. I was not stationed on the USS Missouri; but since I was serving in the Army nearby, I, along with others, was allowed to attend the signing of the Japanese surrender. The American and Japanese officials came aboard and sat on either side of a long table prepared for them. One of these matchbooks was put at each place setting. When the ceremony ended and the officers were leaving, one of the Japanese officials dropped this matchbook on the deck. A few minutes later I picked it up. I believe it's probably the only one in existence today." Perkins T. Bowers.
