1. Notes from Meeting October 20, 1961: Railroad Centennial Day. List of person responsible for publicity and their duties. Invitees: Governor and Cabinet, Railroad Commission, Officials of Railroad Lines, Board of Park memorials, City & County Officials, Managers of Mills in Yulee and Fernandina, Heads of Civil Organizations, Railroad Retirees. 2. Program presented by Florida Board of Parks and Historic Memorials for Railroad Centennial Day on November 5, 1961. High School Band provided music. President of Seaboard Airline Railroad Company, John W. Smith, gave the address. Many government officials and retired railroaders spoke. 3. A brief summary of railroad history from the Internal Improvement Act of 1849 to 1891. 4. Handwritten note stating Florida Railroad lost $20,000 in 1865 when Yulee was a political prisoner. Railroad was sold in Isaac K. Roberts in 1866 for $323,400 and deed to Edward M. Dickerson. Business later improved. 5. Notes on planning for ceremony Railroad Centennial Day. 6. Smith, Agent, Seaboard Air Line Railroad Co., Fernandina, from W. N. Galphin, Chairman, Fort Clinch State Park Advisory Board,dated July 15, 1961. Letter requests permission to use location at foot of Center Street in the Seaboard Railroad's park area which adjoins the Buccaneer Laundry and the Railway Express Agency building for an historic marker commemorating the first cross-state railroad in Florida (between Fernandina and Cedar Keys.) 11. Notice from W. N. Galphin describing program ceremonies for the November 5 unveiling of the historic marker commemorating the first cross-state railroad in Florida. 12. Hester, Superintendent of Seaboard Air Line Railroad Company, Kensington Park, Savannah, GA. 35. Letter of thanks and apology from Galphin dated November 14, 1961 to C. S. Barrett, Assistant General Freight Agent, Seaboard Air Line Railroad Co.. 36. Engraved invitation to ceremonies commemorating Florida's First Cross-State Railroad to be held November 5, 1961. 37. Letter to William Galphin, President, dated 7 October 1961 from Gerald S. Pierce. Pierce encloses a typed transcription of a letter written by General Clinch to Hamilton Fish about Whig chances in the 1844 election. Pierce has the original letter; he offers to send a photostatic copy of the letter for a "dollar or two." 38. Letter to President Galphin from Gerald S. Pierce dated 7 October 1961. Pierce has a letter written by General D. L. Clinch. He encloses a typed transcription and details of the original. Letter was written at Refuge Plantation on 31 October 1844 and addressed to Hon. Hamilton Fish of New York. 39. Letter to W. N. Galphin dated 1 November 1961 from Arthur L. (A. L. Marsh) of 69 Valencia Street, St. Augustine, Florida. Marsh sends a copy of a letter of March 1896 and a map of the Florida Central and Peninsular RR. He also mentions placement of a marker in 1961 by the St. Johns Railway covering the construction of one of the first railways connecting St. Augustine with the St. John's River. 40. Letter to Galphin dated 14 November 1971 from Forrest Olburn thanking him for complimentary letter regarding his handling of the Railroad Centennial Group luncheon. |
