The Florida Mirror January, 1898. This is a New Years, Illustrated Trade Edition that came out. This newspaper includes photo images of the following locations in the newspaper -Saint Josph's Covent, - Villalonga Park, -a photo of Centre Street looking west from fourth street, -there is a photo of a house on 7th street. -There was a birds eye photo taken from the water tower on the island. -There is a photo of Samuel A. Swann at the corner of Centre and 6th Street. -Phosphate and Yellow Pine Company Lumber Dock. - Residence of L.G. Hirth on 6th street There are sections in this paper discussing about the history to different locations buisnesses, and important citizens in the town. Section on "Our Progressive Citizens" discusses many prominent people for the area. Some of the sections discussed include the following - Saint Marys, - Florida Railroad Company -First National Bank - Fred W. Hoyt & Co. - L.G. Hirth - Dr. J. Louis Horsey There is a large article about the changing of the flags on the Amelia Island. One aspect mentioned is that the settlers of the town refered to the battle after Col. Gregor MacGregor left the town as Battle Bluff. There is a section discussing the different churches on the island. It covers some of the history of the churches like how between the years 1857-1860 were busy years on the island for constructing churches. In this section it mentions the Catholic, Methodist, Presbyterian, Baptist churches and that there is 7 different denominations of colored churches on the island. There is an article about how important the port was in Fernadina and includes statics of the day of the amount of traffic, ships, cargo coming in and out of the port of Fernandina as well as how much has been invested by the US government to help maintain the deep water port. Within the article is provides statics on why Fernandina served as an important point as a coaling station for traveling steam freight vessels. It provides some statics on travel time from particular destinations. It says 3 days can be saved by coaling in Fernandina. There is a offical directory list included in this paper of all the important officials and their positions on the island that were in charge of State, County, and City positions. There is a section talking about the phosphate industry on the island, provides stastics on total amount of shipments of phospahate between 1890-1897. It discusses a bit on how cargo is moved by using elevators and wheelbarrows. There is a map of the Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad and showing the railroad connections.
