MARY BOSWELL OBITUARY Mary Holt Johnson Boswell, age 79, of Fernandina Beach, passed away on Friday morning, February 3, 2012 at Savannah Grand of Fernandina Beach. Born in Pensacola, FL she was the daughter of the late Emanuel Joseph Johnson, Sr. and Norma Holt Johnson. She was a graduate of Fernandina High School, Class of 1949 where she was a member of and excelled on the Swim Team. As a teenager in Fernandina she worked as a Life Guard at Main Beach. She later attended the University of Florida where she continued her involvement with organized collegiate team swimming, winning many competitions and receiving many medals. At the age of 19, while home on college break she saved four swimmers from drowning. For her heroic action, she was awarded the Carnegie Medal. From the mid 1970s to the mid 1980s, she lived in Jacksonville and then again in Ponte Vedra Beach. Ms. Boswell was an avid boater, owned her own sail boat and was a member of the Rudder Club of Jacksonville, where she participated in numerous races. She obtained her Florida Real Estate License and worked for the Jacksonville Beach office of Watson Realty. Subsequently, she decided to return to Fernandina Beach where she worked as a Realtor with her brother E. J. Johnson, Jr. until 1993. At that time she joined Amelia Realty where she remained until retiring in 2003. In her later years, she was active in many civic and community affairs as well as in local historic activities. Her oldest brother, former Mayor and City Commissioner, E.J. Jimmy Johnson, Jr., passed away in 2010 and brother, Robert H. Bob Johnson passed away in 1997. She leaves behind, a sister in law, Jean Allen Johnson, a nieces, Sara Holt Sally Johnson, Jeanie Johnson Santana, nephews, Allen Johnson, Robert Bobby Johnson, Jr., and Wayne Chapman Chap Johnson and a great niece, Claire Elizabeth Holmes. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Mayo Clinic, Department of Development, Alzheimers Research, 4500 San Pablo Road, Jacksonville, FL 32224 in Mary Holt Johnson Boswell memory. Her family will receive friends on Friday, February 10, 2012 from 5:00 7:00 pm at Oxley Heard Funeral Home. Ms. Boswell will be laid to rest at La Flora Mission.
