Rachel McRory was the owner of the Norwood House. Norwood House was later known as the Albemarle Hotel. Her husband James H. McRory died in the Civil War (July 1862). Rachel and her two children were living in Bailey's Mills and wished to sell her Fernandina property. She offered it to Alexander T. Stewart who was married to Cordelia M. Clinch. A photocopy of her handwritten letter is included here. The census records of 1860 show J. H. McRory, Rachel R. McRory, Martha W. McRory, and Henry W. McRory living in Fernandina at Whitfield House Hotel. Thirty-three persons are listed in this census as living at Whitfield House Hotel. |
