FILIBUSTERING FERNANDINA STYLE |
Object Name |
Manuscript |
Scope & Content |
An 8-page manuscript of a history of East Coast Florida residents, and Fernandina sailors in particular, who worked for Cuban revolutionaries fighting Spain for independence. Handwritten at the top of page 1: "From Hal Belcher 6-17-93" The manuscript highlights Marti history in New York City and Fernandina seeking funds, supplies and participants for the rebellion. In Fernandina, ship owners and captains were hired, or chartered, to move cargo and combatants to Cuba or Central American locations. Notable filibustering vessels were: "Three Friends," "Dauntless," "Commodore," and "Paul Jones." Napoleon Broward (later Governor), brother Montcalm Broward and George DeCottes owned the "Paul Jones", and Captain Jim Floyd skippered the "Dauntless." Also mentioned is the duel with "swords at sunrise" between N. B. Borden and a disaffected Spanish nobleman in Cuba, which did not occur because at sunrise because Mr. Borden was already part way to Florida on a fishing boat. |
