Light Horse Harry Lee's Death in Georgia 140 Years Ago Is Marked by Dipped Flags Article by Hank Drane published in Florida Times-Union on Sunday, March 30, 1958, on page 25. Lee was to Revolutionary War hero who died March 5, 1818, on Cumberland Island GA. Guests at the commemoration included Mr. and Mrs. Donald Hamilton (Navy commander), Mr. and Mrs. John Rice, Jr. (of Boston) and members of the Carnegie family. Lee's remains were later removed to Lexington VA (in1913). Tom still intact on Cumberland in graveyard which also contains widow of Gen. Nathaniel Greene. See history of Lee family edited by Stanley F. Horn. Lee had been injured to Baltimore riot in 1812 and was traveled to West Indies to regain health. He was returning to Savannah when he came ashore at Dungeness on Cumberland Island) to visit General Greene's widow. Gen. Robert E. Lee visited his father's grave in 1870, shortly before his own death (Sept. 28, 1870). |
