1. Program for the Joint Meeting of the Jacksonville Historical Society and the Florida Historical Society in the Second Congressional District [which includes Nassau] at Jacksonville and Fernandina on May 2 and May 3, 1939. Details of the meeting are given as well as names of speakers, Committee Chairs and Officers of the Jacksonville and Florida Historical Society are given. An exhibit of Floridiana was held at the Keystone Hotel. 2. Letter to W. N. Galphin, Fernandina Historical Society, from Wilson Cora, Local Supervisor of Womens Work Center with bill for material for the McGregor flag and release form. Amount of bill in $1.26 for purchase at R. S. Hobbs Dept. Store in New Smyrna Beach. Letter also states six flags have been mailed. 3. Tentative program for the Regional Meeting of the Florida Historical Society in the First Congressional District at Bradenton and Sarasota. Dated March 1, 1939. Handwritten note: Dear Mr. Galphin--If you will help us with this meeting, it will give you excellent experience for the Fernandina meeting next May--A. J. Hanna. (Galphin is listed as a member of the Program Committee.) 4. Schedule for an exhibit of Floridians at the Keystone Hotel on Wednesday, May 3, 1939. Mr. W. H. Galphin, Fernandina, is listed as a member of the Program Committee. 5. Memorandum from Watt, Marchman, Librarian of the Florida Historical Society, to Members of the Library Committee dated 17 October 1939. A report of activities performed to safeguard the Society's valuable collections. 6. Letter from Galphin to Reference Department, Library of Congress, Washington, D. C. dated 2 February 1939 asking for design and colors of two of the flags that have flown over Fernandina (Flag of the Republic of Mexico and Flag used by the Patriots shortly after the time of Aury). 7. Letter to R. E. Barclay, Kansas City, Mo. from W. N. Galphin dated 2 February 1939 in response to a letter sent from Barclay to the Fernandina Public Library Librarian. Galphin gives information about The Fernandina Guide (which has not yet been published). He also encloses a pamphlet (not found) giving information about Fernandina including a map (Purchase of Florida by Fuller). 8. Letter from Watt Marchman, Secretary of the Essay Contest Committee at Rollins College. Letter dated 18 February 1939 invites members of the committee to a luncheon/meeting which will include the six successful contestants. Handwritten note by Marchman tells Galphin he will be in touch about the regional meeting of the Florida Historical Society in Fernandina. 9. Letter from Galphin dated 27 February 1939 to Mrs. S. J. Sweett of New Smyrna, Fla., acknowledging receipt of her letter with bill of $10.06 from R. S. Hobbs Department Store for materials for the five flags of Florida. Galphin encloses a postal money order. He refers to a memorandum from Library of Congress relative to the others flags. An ad for Transparo Company's silk chiffon in included. 10. Letter to Galphin from T. Frederick Davis (Peninsular Life Building, Jacksonville, Florida) dated 13 March 1939 stating that the Patriot Flag of 1812-13 was a white field with a soldier in blue charging bayonet and the motto "Salus Populi lex suprema." The legend was later altered to read "Vox populi lex suprema." 11. Letter from Galphin dated 4 April 1939 to Mrs. Carita Doggett Corse of West Adams Street, Jacksonville, Fla. She has searched for the proper Mexican flag and concludes that the one shown in the National Geographic magazine is the one that was in use at the time. However, the flag shown was not adopted by Mexico until 1821 and Aury was in Fernandina in 1817. 12. Galphin writes to Gilbert Grosvenor (editor of the National Geographic Magazine) asking for his clarification of the authenticity of the Mexican flag used on the Magazine (and by Galphin in his talk on "Flags of Fernandina." 13. Letter to Galphin dated 19 June 1939 from Watt Marchman, Librarian of the Florida Historical Society (A. J. Hanna, President, located in Winter Park, Florida). Marchman offers Galphin a copy of the address by Mr. Carnegie on Cumberland Island that was printed in the Jacksonville Times-Union. He is interested in a photostat of the Constitution of 1838 and other materials that Galphin has. 14. Letter from Marchman to Galphin dated 6 July 1939 asking for copies of the Fernandina newspaper containing account of the Florida Historical Society in Fernandina to be sent to Mrs. Wallace Neff of 1736 N Street NW in Washington, D. C. (Mrs. Neff is the daughter to Senator David L. Yulee. 15. Letter from Wm. J. Deegan, Jr., President of Lion's Club of Fernandina to Mr. E. B. Snyder, Secretary of Lion's Club of Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico dated 9 August 1939. Deegan requests exact description of the flag of the Republic of Mexico of the particular date that the flag was raised over the City of Fernandina in 1817. Flag was raised by Louis Aury who held a Commission from Mexico. |
