June 29 89 Mr. C. W. Yulee Met Club, Washington D. C. Dear Sir:-- I am in receipt of yours 26th inst. The mistake in re to rent of Papy house was simply a slip -- you are credited with the right amount viz $480.00. I think I wrote you soon after taking charge of your affairs, my opinion as to the value of Hamilton's services @ Cashen. But at that time you did not wish to make any changes. The grove @ Cashen has never yielded one dollar income but has been taxed heavier, being a grove and cultivated land -- Hamilton has a good home, one mule, 2 wagons besides numerous plows, hoes etc.[?] All furnished by you free [underlined] -- besides you pay taxes on the land -- and for all of which you get nothing in return but pay Hamilton $9.00 per mo. for staying on the place. I do not believe the oranges will ever amount to anything. The trees are certainly old enough now to bear fruit sufficient to bring in a small return if they ever will. -- Please do not think I have any personal feelings in this matter. -- I sent enclosed a memo as to how your taxes are made up. Very truly S. D. Swann |
