Fernandez Reserve Cemetery (Villalonga Park) Material prepared by George T. Davis. Land receive in Spanish Grant to Domingo Fernandez. Known as Yellow Bluff Plantation. Second grant known as Eliza or Louisa Plantation (1800). Fernandez sold Yellow Bluff land to City of Fernandina in 1853 for $10/acre. But retained Fernandez Reserve for his family. Cemetery contains graves of Don Domingo Fernandez (1766-1833); wife Mary (of Pensacola, 1777-1846?); two daughters, Elizabeth (1814-1892), husband George Stewart (1810-1889), son Clinton Stewart (1842-1899); daughter Jane Villalonga (1818-1879), husband John Villalonga (1817-1881), son Julius (1837-1877) and daughter Leonilla (1834-1915). Also a grave of Manuela Denaraghy (1803-1884). Relatives of those buried there now living in Fernandina are: Helen Kelly Griffin, Marcel Kelly, Thomas Hall, John Hall, Richard Hall (through Manuela Denaraghy (Acosta)); Dr. Ralph Wolff, Raymond Wolff, Mary Agnes Wolff White (through Elizabeth and George Stewart (Layton)); Eugenia Hood Evans (through Jane and John Villalonga). Also a number of infant children are buried there. Home of Mary and Don Domingo Fernandez stands across 4th Street from the Cemetery. Don Fernandez made "astronomical observations from this house; Mary managed the plantation. Leonilla Villalonga (Miss Nilla) later lived in special apartment built for her over the east wing the St. Joseph's Convent where she lived with adopted daughter Edith Gordon Hood. Two graves in St. Michael's churchyard are former pastors Rev. Charles Sartorio (died 1870 at 27 years old) and Very Rev. John Bertazzi (from Genoa, Italy, who died in 1879. Both died from yellow fever. Bertazzi built the present St. Michael's Church in 1872. |
