The Fernandina News Friday January 17, 1896. The museum owns two copies of this newspaper in different conditions. This newspaper includes a death obituary story about William Redmond Kelly. Early in life he was in charge of of a large mercantile establishment that his father conducted in Callahan. He served 2 years as a postmaster, he worked in the grocery buisness, served 3 terms as an elected city council member. One of those years he served as president of the board. He served as the first president to the Fernandina Western Railroad and vice-president of the company by the time of his death. He was the head of the large wholesale and retail firm Kelly & Bro., and in everything that tended to the upbuilding of Fernandina he was foremost. There is a story about a train accident that happened between Fernandina and Yulee on Train Engine 20 on Wednesday January 15, 1896. A train rod broke and crushed through the cab. The incident tore away the side of the cab which train Engineer Bradford was seated and the rod barley missed him. There is an article about the state of emigration into the American South post Civil War. It talks how immigrants are attracted to the south due to the warm climate and escaping the cold. Within the article there is a statement saying ..."the negro problem, if not settled, is in progress of settlement, and that it is at least no longer a source of irritation." The article comes from Chicago Times Herald There is a lengthy article providing different examples of odd things and animals that are eaten around the world. This newspaper is filled with different advertisements for local buisnesses. Many of the advertisements include the addresses for the buisnesses such as... - Fred W. Hoyt & Company, - W.J. Lohman for furniture, - P.R. Brady for furniture, - The Florida House (located south of Centre street on 3rd street), - J.L. Horsey's Drug Store, - J & T. Kydd (located North East corner of Centre and Third streets. the New York office address is 83 Walker street.), - Suhrer the Jewler store, - Kelly & Bro for Wholesale and Retai, - Armour & Co's., - C. Sahlman (located at the corner of 6th an Ash street), - S, Carrio (cigar shop), - G.F. Avery (located corner of 4th and Beech street), - W.B. Darling (located at the corner of Second and Broome Streets) - C.B. McNairs, Saw and planing Mill (located at the the corner of first and Calhoun street.) Mrs. W. Heckel, Millinery, dry goods, and notions (located Ash street near sixth street. - G. Stark, The Confectioner - P.R. Brady Furniture store Within this newspaper are different medical remedies such as Parkers Ginger Tonic, This newspaper contains a list of steam ship, railroad arrivial and departure times.
