Published in The Florida Times-Union, Jacksonville, Friday, May 2, 1980 The Fairbanks House--or "Fairbanks Folly"--has been called the finest home of Italianate design in Florida and has earned a citation in the National Register of Historic Places. It was designed by Fernandina architect Robert Schuyler and built for Maj. George Fairbanks, who wanted to give it to his wife as a surprise gift. Mrs. Fairbanks became furious when he presented the house to her, because she had not been consulted about the furnishings and decorating. She accepted it, anyway. |
