The Fernandina News Record Friday March 13, 1908 On the front page is a story of a fire on the South side of Fernandina near the Seaboard shops that destroyed five houses around 3 AM. In the process it killed a colored man, his wife, and their two small children. The story mentions that these were new comers to the island and that the neighbors were not aware of their name. The story says the wife and children's bodies were found near the door of the house while the husband was by the bed. It mentions that a heavy wind was happening when the fire occurred. (page 1) There is a story of a body discovered by the manager of the Carnegie estates on Friday, March 6, 1908 at Cumberland Island. (page 1) There is a story of a large German cargo ship named the Rostock. It went to Savannah first and then arrived in Fernandina 2nd because the Fernandina port is deeper. All the cargo picked up from Savannah had to be put on top. Leaving Fernandina it left "carrying 1,900 tons of miscellaneous, 1,000 tons of naval stores, and 3,5000 tons of phosphate." At the time it was the largest record for the most cargo ever leaving Fernandina port. It arrived "drawing 19 feet 9 inches." When this cargo ship left Fernandina it "passed over the bar with a draft of even 26 feet before and after on a falling tide." (page 1) There is a list of different ships in port covering where they came from, the type of vessel they are, and where they are heading to. There is a story covering the North American dredge is occurring on the upper part of the harbor in Fernandina and in Cumberland ports. It mentions that the width of the 1st cut of the dredging process was 150 feet. The intention was for 3 150 feet cuts to exist but they ran out of pipes (Page 1) There is a notice that Annie Leddy passed away on Tuesday March 10, 1908. She is the mother of J.J. Kelly. She was the proprietress to the Florida House for many years. She was the owner up to her passing of the Florida House. She is buried in Bosque Bello cemetery. (Page 1) There is a list of honor roll students at Fernandina Beach High School for the week ending on March 6, 2024. (bottom of Page 1) There is a paragraph announcement from pastor P.A. Callaham, B.D. saying the corner stone to New Zion Baptist Church on the corner of 10th and Centre streets will be laid on Sunday March 22, 1908 at 3:00 PM. They invite both white and colored to be present at the event. They mention that a "liberal donation is asked from each one." (bottom of Page 1) There is a story about a LaDell-Fox concert Company from Toronto, Canada are appearing the the Lyceum having some of the best musicians play from Atlanta, Georgia come to play in Fernandina. It mentions that the tickets for the concert seats were sold at Whitney's store for the prices between .25 cents, .35 cents, and .50 cents per seat. (page 8) There is a story saying new maps of Florida are now on sale. They are designed by Mr. A.H, Clayton and executed by C.H. Hammond & company in New York. It says it contains much valuable information needed for the office, library, or home. (page 8) There is a 7-paragraph article on shaving razors from the Washington Post on page 2. It describes the importance of sharpening the blades and tips on when to do so and why. It also describes the razors of the day with an ivory handle. There is an announcement from the post office and from the newspaper that subscriptions for the newspaper have to be paid in advance to receive a newspaper and that it will not be sent without a 1 cent postage stamp and subscribers must pay for postage. The article mentions this new rule starts the 1st day of February 1908. (top of page 2 and page 3) There is a article coming from Chicago about the different fines a shop girl receives in her paycheck. In the article it shows a list of the fines and the prices for those fines like chewing gum 10 cents, 10 cents for writing indistinct duplicate, 10 cents for address errors, leaving less than one yard of ribbon roll (referring to a type writer ribbon). More penalties are mentioned in the article seen on page 2. At the end of this particular paycheck she had 85 cents to pay taken out of her paycheck. There a story titled "An Old Problem" about what happened once when A king who offered a subject whatever he wanted. The subject said he would be satisfied with one grain of wheat and eventually multiplied for each square of a chess board until each square of the board was filled. Eventually the king offered if he would be satisfied with half of the kingdom instead of the original offer the subject asked for. If the king had stuck with the subjects original contract that would have ended up 44,000,000,000,000 bushels of wheat. (story on page 3) Page 5 list the different people running as candidacy for the next election. Some of the roles include county commissioner, county judge, tax assessor, sheriff, school superintendent. Each candidate says why they are qualified for the job and a little on what they want to focus in. (page 4) There is a lengthy poem titled "Pen sketches of Fernandina" describing Fernandina's features credited by M.A.Z. (Page 4) There is a story about Chief Engineer for the Seaboard Air Line Railway named Mr. W. L. Seddon was in town to do business connected to construction being prepared for the phosphate elevator. It mentions that the lumber to construct it is already on the ground but waiting for some machinery to start construction no later than April 1, 1908. There is a paragraph giving the history of hypnotism covering from the mid 1860's-1884 (bottom of page 4) Advertisements included in this Newspaper are. - Miss McCottery's located on 4th street behind the Post Office (Page 8) - Suhrer. The Jeweler (Page 8) - J. & T. Kydd (Page 8) - Seaboard Air Line Railway. - Huckleberry Cigar for 5 cents from the Lee Roy Myers Company. (Page 2) - Foley's Kidney cure (Page 7) - International Correspondance School in Scranton, Pennsylvania. It shows an illustration of a man in a dark suit using a grindstone. (page 7) - Fay-Sholes type writer in Chicago. It shows an illustration of the type writer. (page 2) - Doctor Carrol H. Frink Dentist located in Jeffreys Building in Rooms 1-3 at address 205 1/2 Centre Street. (page 3) - Herbine shows a illustration of woman of the day having a headache. Sold for 50 cents a bottle. (page 3) - Bicycle advertisment from Mead Cycle Company in Chicago, Illinois. Shows and illustration of a bicycle and bicycle air volve. (page 3) - L.G. Hirth for liquor and wines. Shows and illustration od a woman sitting in a chain and a man is badly faded in the background. (Page 3) - John B. Stetson University (Page 3) - The Florida Lunch Room located at 304 Centre Street. (page 3) - Mularky Brothers (bottom of Page 5) - Florida Mid-Winter Exposition admission price being 25 cents. The Advertisement shows a large building with siloets of people walking around. (page 4) - R.H. Jones Co. it shows two illustrations of men in their suit providing descriptions of what the store has to offer. (top of Page 4) - First National Bank, of Fernandina. List different employees at the bank. - The Kelly Brothers company. It shows a woman in a hat and dress sitting at the counter filled with different products such as ox tongues, jams, tea and other goods in jars with a gentleman with a mustache.
