Nassau County Leader, Friday February 23, 1923 Under the title of the newspaper it says Nassau County Leader and the Fernandina News-Record consolidated on December 15, 1920. There is a city council report on the top left of page 1 mentioning who were the board members present at the meeting including names like Waas, Mularkey, Humphreys, Hardee, Merrow, Roux, and McMurray. Messrs. Geo. L. Roux and Leroy McMurray were sworn in by the clerk. - The business at the meeting included Mr. F.H. Gorenflo application to erect a private garage on the rear of his residence on South 7th street was approved. - A "Resolution, granting permission to the Board of Public Instruction of Nassau County to erect and have use of a small building on the city park reserved near the colored school on North Eleventh street was adopted by the council." - An ordinance entitled, "An Ordinance providing for the Prevention of Mosquitoes in the City of Fernandina, and Prescribing Penalty for Violation of th Provisions Thereof" was laid off till next meeting. - The light and water committees was authorized to have electric light line to the beach run out Center Street instead of Beach Street. Before this meeting Electric light lines ran out of Beach Street. (top of page 1) As part of the Woman's Club of Fernandina there is a announcement about trying to make yards beautiful. The Woman's Club is giving plants, schrubs, and seeds will be given and exchanged by the club. Prizes for the most beautiful yard will be awarded twice a year. It provides a list of 6 names from the committee for seeds or for more information. - Mrs. J.B. Polhill, Chmn. - Mrs. D.H. Ground - Mrs. A. B. C. Davenport - Mrs. L. Grunwald - Mrs. W.T. Haile - Mrs. D.P. Mularkey (page 1) In the Shipping News section it mentions three cargo ships arriving in Fernandina port and what the significant cargo on board will be onboard. U.S.S.B. meaning United States Shipping Board - U.S.S.B "Flour Spar" arrived on February 23, from Tampa for 1,000 tons of phosphate. It loaded 3,300 tons of phosphate in Fernandina then retuns back to Tampa to complete cargo. - U.S.S.B. "Coldwater" due on Saturday, February 24, 1924 from Charleston for 3,000 tons of phospate. - Steamship "Hermoth" Due on March 1, 1924 for 3,300 tons of phosphate. It will sail for Poland. (page 1) There is an announcement that Roberts Company, expert builders and repairers of sewing machines arrived in Fernandina. They will provide service only available in large manufacturing cities. Cleaning, repairing, overhauling family machines, charging only for supplies and time used in the work. (page 1) There is an announcement of a new store opening called the Sunrise Department Store on Friday February 23, 1923 right where the Cash Market used to be in. I. M. Lieberman of Jacksonville owner of the Jacksonville Sunrise Department store is the one establishing the Fernandina store. He arrived in Fernandina the week before the opening of the store to bring in dry goods. He is making the manager of the Fernandina store Mr. L. Sapp, of Jacksonville. (page 1) In story titled "Fernandina Plans Campaign Against Mosquito" It mentions how a "special meeting held at the Yulee Communitty House" on the night of Tuesday, February 20, 1923 based on a response call from Major H. J. Baker to exterminate the mosquitos completly. At this meeting a temporary committee was appointed by Mayor Baker to act. The article list the names of the many people apart of this committee that was formed at this meeting. At the meeting they decided to meet Friday February 23 in the evening at the Keystone Hotel to map out the entire plan to campaign to get ride of the mosquitoes. (Page 1) In a story titled "New Store Opens" It says I. M. Lieberman, of Jacksonville, the owner of the Sunrise Department Store in Jacksonville arrived in Fernandina the week before this newspaper was published "with a stock of dry goods and establish himself in the building formerly occupied by the Cash Market." His manager from Jacksonville Mr. L. Sapp will open his new store on Friday, February 23, 1923. There is a story titled "UpShaw is Right" That talks about how in Georgia the Congressman Upshaw is defending that prohibition of alchol and laws patroizing botleggers is a violation of the United States Consitition. (page 1) (In the left column of page 2) provides information such as For Local and Long Distant calls use phone number 40. The Top right of page 2 list the names of people and types of new Ford automobiles sold from the Lasserree Motor Company between February 1-21, 1923. The list does not include sold used automobiles. Some of the names included in the list are - Arnold Cox from O'Neil a touring car - W.B. Scott from O'Neil a touring car - E.P. Davis from Crandall purchased a truck. - Glyndon Waas who purchased at Fernandina a coupe - F.H. Higginbotham purchased in Fernandina a touring car - Carnnarella Brothers in Fernandina purchased a truck. There is a story about the board agreeing to bury deceased white convicts in the city of Fernandina. They accepted the bid from Mrs. Estelle Rogers to only bury white deceased convicts in the city of Fernandina and additionally accepted that the colored person Sam Brown could also be burried in the city of Fernandina (Page 2) - Within the paper is a statement that reads "German currency has just about one more step to take before it reaches the point where it will be a liability instead of an asset." This shows how Germany is doing in a post Great War/World War I state but before we see it in World War II (page 4) In an article titled "Telephone Records are Public Records" It goes into great detail providing all types of stastics about the Southern Bell Tellephone and Telegraph Company. It says that the company opperates in 5 Southern states that include Alabama, Georgia, Florida, North and South Carolina. In those 5 states it has installed 52,671 telephones and discontinued 39,419. In 1922 the company's gross opperating revenue was $16,119,652 and it's opperating expenses amounted to $13,191,180, snd its net revenue was $2,928,472. A net return of 6.231 percent of the total average investment during the year. At the time of the article there were "6,600 Southern Bell employes and the company;s annual pay roll is more than $7,374,500.00. The company owns 292 Central offices, 782,643 miles of wire, 13,105 miles of pole lines and 1,045 miles of underground duct included in its local and toll plant." Continue reading this article to learn even more statics. (page 4) In an article titled "Rules for Success" It provides advice for success from Doctor Woo Fong from China. Some of the advice in the article includes: "-Live within your income at all costs. -However small may be your income, put something aside before the rainy day comes. -Use your leisure moments forself-improvement. -Pay attention to the problem of selecting your friends. -Learn ro give something for the support of charitabile enterprises. -Keep your body strong by having a few simple rules of health and observe them faithfully." (page 4) - There is a recomenation from a lady on a way to eliminate roaches in your house is to have 4 to 5 little frogs for 2 or 3 days. When you are done return the frogs back to your garden. (middle right of page 4) In the article titled "Callahan Now Has All Night Electric Current" It mentions that before the town originally had electric current between 5-11 PM to now all night service. It mentions "it will no doubt provide a great convenience to patrons of the municipally owned plant." (Page 5) No. 17 on South 3rd street is being advertised as a house for rent. It is the home opposite of the Florida House. It says to apply to S.W. Gluck. (page 6) Mularkey's is promoting "Thomason's Glovefitting Girdle Corsets and topless models for slight figures at $1.00 at Mularkey's" (page 6) - There is a Mularkey's promotion for "Ladies' four button Kid Gloves to close out this season's stock for $1.69 per pair at Mularkey's." (page 6) - The newspaper reports on people visiting Amelia Island with "Miss Nancy Carnegie and Miss. Sherlock, of Cumberland Island, spent Monday (February 19) in town. (page 6) -Newspaper reports that "Captain T.B. Lasserre spent from Saturday until Tuesday in town with his family, en route from New York to Mobile, Alabama being in command of the tug boat, "Harry M. Lytle," and having two other tugs in tow." (Page 6) - There is listing for "land for sale that is 50x225, leading from street with shrimp canning and packing plant theron. All necessary machinery, building 21x155." (page 6) - There is a story saying Mr. John W. Barnett resigned from his position at the Horsey's Drug Store after being there for 10 months. He left for White Springs. (page 6) - There is a story of "Miss Anne Townsend, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, passed through town Saturday en route to Cumberland Island for a visit with Miss Lucy Carnegie at Stafford Place." Some of the advertisements included in this paper include the following - Suhrer jeweler and druggist (Bottom page 1) - 111 Cigarettes, Turkish Virginia Burley, The American Tobacco company 15 for 10 cents. (page 2) - The prices for the Nassau County Leader newspaper as subscriptions One year subscription cost $1.50 6 mounth subsciption cost 0.75 cents a single copy of the newspaper cost a nickel (page 2) - Peace's 5, 10, and 25 cent store "THe store of Everything) Sells stationery, toys, and candies. Agents for Brunswick Phonographs and Records. (page 2) - The Keystone Hotel promotes that week day meals at 75 cents Sunday Dinners are $1.00 (bottom of page 2) - The REX Theatre is promoting different movies playing for the week of February 26-March 2nd. (A) The Broken Silnce (1922) with director Dell Henderson. The cast of actors include Zena Keefe, Joseph Depew, Dorthy Allen, Robert Elliot, Jack Drumier. The movie plays at the theater on Monday February 26, 1923 at ticket prices 35 and 15 cents (B) The Man who Had Everything (1920) with director Alfred E. Green. Stars Jack Pickford, Lionel Belmore, Theodore vo Elz, Pricilla Bonner, and Shannon Day. This filmed played on Tuesday February 27 at a ticket price at 25 and 10 cents (C) Up and Going (1922) with stars Tom Mix, Eva Novak, Sid Jordan, Carol Holloway, Paul Weigel. The film plays Wednesday February 28 with tickets sold at 25 and 10 cents. (D) Flesh and Blood (1922) Directed by Irving Cummings. It stars Lon Chaney, Edith Roberts, Noah Beery, DeWitt Jennings, Ralph Lewis, and Jack Mulhall. The film plays Friday and Saturday March 1-2 with tickets sold at 35 to 15 cents. (E) Speed the 11th episode plays on Saturday March 3, with tickets sold at 25 to 10 cents. The title of the 11th episode of Speed is "Into the Crusher." Speed was a action serial that was made up of 15 episodes all together. The serilalized silent shorts were directed by George B. Seitz that stared actors Charles Hutchison and Lucy Fox. It mentions at the bottom the film showings this week start at 7:45 PM. (bottom of page 2) - Island City Market for groceries located on Center and 3rd street. (page 3) - Fernandina Cash Garage (page 3) - Lasserre Motor Company in Fernandina sales of Ford cars. It list - Chassis for $235.00 - Runabout for $269.00 - Touring for $298.00 - Truck Chass for $380.00 - Coupe for $530.00 - Sedan for $595.00 (page 3) - J. Geo Suhrer and E.F. Grunwald optometrist and Master Optician (page 4) -Mentholatum help with colds (page 4) - 666 prescription for cold, feavers, and LaGrippe. (page 4) - J. Geo. Suhrer and E.F. Franze promoting Royal Guaranteed Fly Destroyer $3.00 a gallon plus sprayer. (bottom of page 4) - Atlantic Fruit Stand phone 39 promoting live hens for 35 cents and dressed hensat 45 cents. (page 4) - Sunrise Department Store located next to the postal telegraph office on Center street. This add promotes the grand opening being the day this paper was published Friday February 23. It says the first 50 customers that make a purchase will receive a beautiful souvenir. The bottom of the add says "wanted - six sales ladies" (top of page 5) - Allan's is promoting that demonstrations will be conducted by a native Bohemian girl named Matilda who will demonstrate how unicum hair nets are made in her country while in her attire sheould wear from her own country on Monday February 26 and Tuesday February 27, 1923. (page 5) - First National Bank of Fernandina (page 6) - L. Grunwald Jeweler (page 6) - 11th street Wood Yard is advertising that they are selling (A) pine wood for $2.00 per load (B) Oak for $2.25 per load (C) mix of pine and oak wood for $2.10. The phone number is 251-W (page 6) - Mularkey's (page 6) promotes 500 McCall's new spring patterns for your selection. - Flacks phone number 87. It promotes call for fried or roast chicken. It then promotes a little further down in the left column to call the number for ice cream to be delivered promptly. Flacks also sells fine handmade cigars and assorted candies. (page 6) - Flacks has listed for rent "upper flatt of 4 rooms, kitchen, bath, and hall. Apply at Flacks' Cigar store. (page 6) - Mularkey's offers "Thomson's Glovefitting Girdle corsets and topless models for slight figures at $1.00." (page 6) - Mularkey's is offering "Granite Art Squares, size 9x12, in attractive designs that have the appearance of expensive rugs and wear well. Now being offered at $9.98." (Page 6) - Horsey's Drug Store, Fernandina, Florida (page 6) - King's Cash Grocery located at the corner of Center street and 4th street Phone number 15 (page 6) - Stokes-Passieu Motor Company in Hilliard, Florida.
