Letter of petition to award an honorary degree from the Citadel to James Welsman Brown. James Welsman Brown was a member of the Committee of Correspondemce that initiated the first direct appeal to the federal government for the return of THe Citadel to the control of the state of South Carolina and to reestablish it as the Sout Carolina Military Academy following the Civil War. Brwon was born in Charleston, S.C. and attended The Citadel in 1858. In October of 1861 he left The Citadel to accept an appointment as a 1st lieutenant in the Confderrate States Army. Brown engaged with Sherman's right flank in the Battle of Bentonville, N.C. Included are accounts of Brown's military involvement and a copy of his personal journal kept during the war. This portrait was painted by Shawna Vargas, great, great, great granddaughter of James Welsman Brown. Brown is the great-grandfather of William H. Rutledge, Jr., a long time resident of Fernandina Beach, FL. |
