Postcard |
Scope & Content |
Collection of postcards with the seal from the Dorion dig, one gold, one silver. The seal was found during the Dorion Dig which occurred after human remains were uncovered on land owned by George and Dottie Dorion (of Jacksonville) (during construction of a house) in 1984. The seal was found at the site of the Santa Catalina de Gaule Mission on Amelia Island. The Mission seal depicts early Christian martyr St. Catherine of Alexandria. It was used by the priests to send official documents through the Spanish bureaucracy. The mission was destroyed by British and Indian attackers under South Carolina Governor James Moore in 1702. |
