The VVNC was founded in the mid 1980's by a group of veterans who had served in-county in Vietnam. The organization was formed at a time when the Vietnam veteran was often long down on by other veteran organizations and the population as a whole. The intent of the organization was to provide a safe place for these veterans to meet, socialize and serve the community based on a common life experience. They adopted the slogan "Together Than, Together Again". The intent was to support the veterans and their families in the Nassau County community. The organization became an integral part of the veteran community. They supported the City of Fernandina Beach Memorial Day services and the annual Veterans Day parade. The VVNC were instrumental in bring the Moving Wall to Nassau County in 1996. They provided an honor guard around the clock while the Moving Wall was in the county. The flags that were displayed at the Wall represented all 50 states plus territories of the United States. These flags have since been displayed at the foot of the Shave's Bridge during key holidays. The VVNC has participated in the annual Shrimp Festival for over twenty years. They are best known for their Shrimp Pies. The funds raised from their participation have been used to support a number of organizations throughout the years. These include; Barnabas Center, the Salvation Army Hope House, The Fernandina Beach High School JrROTC, the West Nassau High School JrROTC, the Shop-for-Cop programs, the Five Star Veterans Center, the Jacksonville Veterans Center, Veteran's hospital programs, Toys for Tots, and a host of other organization and community needs Through the years the members of the VVNC have taken on leadership roles with the other key veteran organization in Nassau County. Time and attrition has taken its toll on the organization. In August 2021 the remaining members voted to dissolve the organization. It has served its purpose and over time its members will join their comrades |
