Describes the first acquisition of property on Cumberland Island by Thomas and Lucy Coleman Carnegie; their children; the history of the various homes built on the Island by Lucy for her children; and the involvement of various Carnegie descendants with the Island as of the time of the article (1979). Describes the acquisition of most of the Island by the National Park service beginning in 1969 and the plans to open plum Orchard to the public in the summer of 1979.
