Handwritten recollections (possibly by Nancy Seibert) a. The Jetties (from Monthly Bulletin, Port of Fernandina for month of March 1902) describes dredging and construction of jetties in 1900. Allowed vessels with 26' draft to enter channel. Firm of Christie, Lowe & Heyworth used. Also dredge from Bath ME. b. The Mansion Hotel--Broome St. Opened in 1871. 1883 saw complete renovation. 50 elegantly appoint sleeping apartments. Destroyed by fire many years ago and lot was vacant until 19--when Mr. John Ferreira purchased half of the land and built a home for his family. Another hotel was the Virginia House, Fernandina, Florida, October 1st, 1868, with John M. Payne, proprietor. c. J. W. Latham, Harbor Master, Port of Fernandina. Son of one of the two original Fernandina branch pilots. Born and educated in Fernandina. Appointed Harbor Master in 1878. Grandson of Amos Latham (07/18/1760--04/28/1842) died at Light House as did his wife, Jane. Both buried on grounds of Amelia Island Light House. d. The Egmont Hotel. Erected in 1878 at 7th and Beech. George W. Kittelle, Proprietor. Describes building and gardens. Dining hall can seat 100. Open from December to May. Opened to public in 1879 by Mr. B. H. Skinner. e.. Fort San Carlos. Built 1686; now surrounded by Old Town. Gate and blockhouse built to guard settlement. The Plaza used as parade ground. Excavated in1962 by archaeology professor from Florida State University and exact structure found. Fort re-covered to avoid deterioration and should be re-excavated. f. Old F.C.& P Railroad (Florida Central and Peninsular Railroad Company).."Flying Cracker" operated Jacksonville to Tampa. Florida Northern Railroad (Yulee to Georgia) later merged with FC&P (1889). g. Reads Mill. Established 1868 by J. C. Read; enlarged in 1872. Nine million feet of product annually; shipped to West Indies and South America. Located close to Old Town. Mr. Read fought in the Civil War for the Union. He lived at 312 Escambia St. Two fertilizer plants later occupied the Read's Mill location. h. The Florida House. Mrs. A. Leddy, Proprietress, South 3rd St. Opened in 1884. Grace Leddy born there. She married William Kelly and lived at 30 South 3rd Street. Their sons were J. Howard Kelly [Editor Note: T. Howard Kelly] and Redmond Kelly. When President Ulysses Grant visited Fernandina, he stopped at Egmont Hotel and was entertained at Florida House. Florida House built by Florida Railroad Co. in 1861; Mr. Yulee was President. i. Fernandina. Recounts history of Fernandina. j. Capt. Robert Downes. Born on Cumberland Island in 1856. (Father of Nancy Downes Seibert.) Moved to Old town and bought house from Capt. James Bell (who built it in 1880). On the Plaza was Government house (used for workers to live in while dredging the river and building the jetties). Government House town down in 1927. k. Col. N. B. Borden. Exporter of lumber and ship broker. Met Florence Reynard when her father's sailing vessel visited. He married her in Cuba and later built Villa Las Palmas at 4th and Alachua. Son named Nathaniel Barnett Borden, Jr. lived at Villa Las Palmas until his death 07/27/1938. l. Oxley House. See mortgage abstract (1868 to 1948). m.
