Fernandina In The Long Ago by George E. Wolff. Locally there is an effort now being made to re-establish, chronologically, the record of the municipal administrations of the City of Fernandina. We are considerably handicapped, however, due to disastrous fires and the carelessness of the long ago custodians of public records, requiring contributory events to establish facts, as indicated by foot notes of the Clerk of the Circuit Court on several deeds recorded for the second time. One of such deeds having been acknowledged as of December 21st, 1838, bearing the following foot note: "Clerk's office, Nassau County, recorded second time, the record of the first having been destroyed by fire from my office, having been burned the fifth day of December, 1840". There is no local record of this fire, and we must conclude that it occurred about 1839 between the date of the deed and that of the last record. This fire at the same time must have destroyed any municipal records, as at that period the County and City authorities had the same office. |
