Nassau County Leader Friday March 27, 1925 - Top left corner is an article talking about a meeting from the board of governors on the aims to help in the development in trade, commerce, industry and education. This article includes a list of objectives to help reach those aims. Page 2 continues about those aims, what is the objective of the aims to help improve the community, goes over the importance of contributing to the community and what is a committee. (page 1-2) There is a list of the people arriving to the Keystone hotel and what towns they are coming from. (page 1) There is an article on the top right covering how the poultry industry has been growing in the town of Hilliard. It mentions how the poultry industry started in Hillard 9 years prior to this article. It says there are at least 40 old farms raising poultry and 30 of those farms belong to the Hillard Poultry Association. (page 1) The front page talks about the Mayor of Fernandina P.C. Kelly having a Civic week in Nassau County between March 30-April 4. This would include group meetins, a motorcade to Callahan in the interests of the projected hard surface road to Yulee. There is a meeting at the Nassau County Courthouse in Fernandina inviting well known Jacksonville and Florida Civic workers. (page 1) There is an article titled "What does Fernandina Need" based on talking to Fernandina Beach High School about what does Fernandina need, goals or careers students want to get into after High School. It is an interesting article when it comes to page two because it gives answers on what did the students at the time see that the town needed at the time and jobs they sought that may be available or no longer around. Some of the jobs metioned that students intended to become include stenographer, lawyer, book keeper, electrical engineer, merchant, telegraph operator, teacher, civil engineering, musician. They also asked the students "What do you suggest that the Chamber of Commerce undertake for the improvement of Fernandina and Nassau county? Some of the answers included better roads, better school and recreational facilities. A dozen or so urged for steps to attract more outside capital and tourist to Fernandina. (Bottom of page 1 and continues on the top of page 2) In the article titled "State Shell Fish Com. Hodges Here Tuesday" discussing concerns over violations over "Section 28 of the Coastal Fisheries Bill passded by yhe General Assembly of Georgia and approved on August 8, 1924." The law reads " That all persons not citizens of this state (Georgia) are herby prohibited from engaging in the taking or catching of shrimp or prawn from the salt waters of this State for commercial purposes" The law says "violating these laws shall be punished as for a misdemeanor." Florida and Georgia regulations on fishing and catching shrimp in Florida and Georgia salt water. It asks how should this be dealt with on catching sea life over boarders based upon different laws. (top right page 2) A list of circuit court decissions coming out of the Nassau County Courthouse (page 3) There is a statement that tells you the times of judging women's fashion back in 1925. The statement says "In these days of shorter skirts and abbreviated hair, it takes a birth certificate to tell her exact age. (page 3) In Master Sale it has an advertisment for the sale of different pieces of land in Callahan from Meade and Elizabeth Higginbitham. (Page 3) In the left hand column of page 4 It says "local and long distance phone, 40" The left hand column of page 4 contains many proverb statements of advice. Some of these proverbs include: - "A good borrower is never broke." - "A gasoline appetite quickly ruins a bicycle income." - Why is it poor folks always regars their rich relatives as stingy?" - "The phrase. "It's nobdy's buisness" covers a multitude of sins." - "Fashions constantly change, but good taste never goes out of style." - "Financial success is a simple matter of making money faster than others can take it away from you." - "One thing about getting your sermons by radio - there's no one to see you nod at dull moments. In the article titled "A New Fernandina Spirit." It covers the objectives and purpose of the Chamber of Commerce. "The Chamber of Commerce is an oganization for everybody. It is non-sectarian and non-partisan and it's membership is open to every man an woman who has faith in the future of Fernandina and believes in the value of co-operative effort." (Top of page 4) There is an article about 32 Boy Scouts from Troop 5 staying at Fort Clinch and their activities. They are a troop from the Church of the Immaculate Conception. The article mentions that "six or eight new Tenderfoot scouts were initiated." (The article spells it as Tenderfeet to try and make it plurel but it should be Tenderfoot.) Tenderfoot is the first rank a Boy Scout can earn once they join a scout troop. The Troop attended mass on Sunday at Saint Michael's Catholic Church where the front row was reserved for the troop to sit ahead of time. The article mentions the patrol names represented in this troop as The flying eagles, the panther, and silver fox patrols. (page 4) There is a story titled "Hillard a great poultry producing center" that covers how Callahan and Hillard are growing in this era. It starts off saying "Callahan Telephone Company has recently been installed with more than thirty subscribers to start with" "Houses are also at a premium at Hilliard, as there is not a vacant home in the town." (page 4) There is a announcement that Mrs. Estelle Rogers purchased the Bridier property, corner 5th and Ash streets. Occupied at the time of this newspaper being published by Mrs. W. H. Seibert (top of page 5) In the article titled "American Legon Convention in Saint Augustine" It list a number of different activities that the American Legon will have in Saint Augustine. One is a car race on the Saint Augustine beach driven by professional drivers and cars. It goes on April 6-7. It mentions a parade on the second day of the convention. The paper mentions that they expect a large gathering of World War I veterans. (page 5) In the article titled "Take a Vacation this Summer ov. Expense" It says "Every young man between 17 and 24 years of age, should take advantage of the wonderful oppertunity to take a month's vacation at government expense by attending the Citizen's Military Training Camps." It is held July 2-July 31 at different forts in Georgia, Florida, North Carolina and Camp McClellan, in Alabama. This experience includes "railroad fare to and from camp, board, lodging, uniform, and laundry free. They will not be asked to join the National Guard, Organized Reserves or any other branch of the service." The article list a number of sports recreational activities that are apart of the camp training. (Top of page 5) There is a proverb that reads "A man can never pull himself out of the mire by his own bootstraps. Neither can a man get any good out of co-operation unless he co-operates." (page 5) There is a public notice from Bailey-Davis Co., INC agents saying "neither the Master, Owners, Agents nor Consignees of German S.S. "Cronshagen" will be responsible for debts of any character contracted by any officer or member of the crew of said steamer." The notice says for stores to check with the office of when this ships departure occures so that bills are due before the ships depature time. (page 6) There is a page titled "We invite you to the Comradeship" coving objectives of a big Civic Rally on Thursday, March 19, 2025 at 8:00 PM at the Nassau County Court House talking about trade and buisness. It mentions that the Chamber of Commerce in Fernandina started 25 years prior to this issue of the newspaper was published. In the article it mentions that before 1925 that the Chamber of Commerce was run by a small group of people with insufficient funds to get things done or be able to pay its workers. It mentions something like 64 strong on buisnesses and people. At the bottom of this announcemnt plan list a bunch of names of buisnesses and people that are well known in the community of Fernandina that they would like to attend this Nassau County Court House meeting. (Page 7) There is an announcement saying "Don't forget the motorcade to Callahan next Tuesday, the 31" (March). This is part of the Mayor's Civic week in Nassau county (page 8) There is an article titled Scriptural Entertainment. It mentions how Thursday afternoon at Saint Peter's Guilded hall there was entertainment there. They mention songs that were sung, who sang them. But it mentions that "Miss. Fannie Williams read scripture names in negro dialect which was very amusing." They also did an "ascriptural contest" of the Bible. (right column on page 8) Some of the advertisements included in this paper include the following - Geo. Suhrer's Druggist, Fernandina (page 1) It is promoting a coupon 1 time deal for a house with a thermometer on it. It has a illustration of the house with children and a witch, a bird, a deer head. The house is similar to a bird house or a cookoo clock. (page 3) - Herbine is a remedy helps the liver, stomach and bad breath. It says the product can be purchased at J. Geo. Suhrer.in Fernandina and Conner Drug Co. in Callahan (page 3) - Dixie Resturant. The sea food resturant is located on Center street between Front and Second streets. The add says that it will open on Sunday March 1, 1925. (bottom page 3) - Dr. King's New Discovery for Coughs (Page 4) - Island City Market located on Center and 3rd street (page 4) shows an illustration of a woman in a hat looking st different types of meats in a store. - Keystone Hotel. Offers meals on the week days at 75 cents and Sunday Dinners at $1.00 (page 4) - The REX Theatre is promoting several films. -"Painted People" (1924) is a comedy/drama that is directed by Clarence G. Badger. The film stars Colleen Moore, Ben Lyon, Charlotte Merriam, Mary Alden, Joseph Striker. The film is playing March 30-31 at 10 and 25 cents - "The Light That Failed" (1923) A Paramount film directed by George Melford. It features Jacqueline Logan, Percy Marmont, and David Torrence, Mabel an Buren, Sigrid Holmquist The film plays April 1-2 at 10 and 25 cents - "Blow your own Horn" (1923) comedy film with Warner Baxter, Ralph Lewis, Derlys Perdue Eugene Acker, Eugenie Forde. The film plays Friday April 3, 1925 at 25 amd 50 cents. - A Little of Everything to please for the hour and half. Saturday April 4 at 10 and 25 cents. (bottom page 4) - Wolff & Company Real Estate located at North 4th street opposite of the Post Office. Grunwald Jeweler (top right page 8) - There is a sale or rent notice for the house located at 117 South 8th street P.O. Box 286. The description of the house is that it has 7 rooms, bath, and a garage, on lot 50x100 feet. (page 8) - There is a sale notice from "C.C. Conner" in Hilliard, Florida for "four yoke of oxen and cart. good team and cart and all rigging in first class condition." (page 8) - There is a sale promoting "Wanted to Buy -- Copies of "Fairbanks History of Florida, and the of "Fairbanks History of Saint Augustine." Address Box 445, Fernandina, Florida." (page 8) Fairbanks History of Florida was originally published in 1871. Author is George Rainsford Fairbanks (Lived 1820-1906). There are several spots promoting the store Peggy O'Neil dresses on page 8. One of the promotions says "Why not look at our Peggy O'Neil Dresses before taking that shopping trip to Jacksonville? It will pay you." Another one says "Remember when you buy a Peggy O'Neil frock you will not meet another one like it on the next corner, for only one of each kind is sold in a community."
