Surveyed the coast of Florida in 1848-9 as part of the Army Corps of Engineers. He detailed the area around Miami and Jacksonville-St. Augustine. On November 5, 1861, he was assigned by Jefferson Davis to evaluate Southern defenses. In November 1861, he visited Fernandina and determined the defenses to be poor. On a second visit on January 17, 1862, he visited the grave of his father on Cumberland Island and stated that the defenses were growing stronger. Lee favored abandoning Fort Clinch in favor of strenthening more important locations. |
