Notes |
Changed his last name from Yulee to Levy (his grandfather's last name). In 1800, he moved from Gibraltar to St. Thomas. He purchased 100,000 acres of land in Spanish Florida. His first plantations were eight miles above Lake George on the St. John's. He created a colony called New Pilgrimage for persecuted Jews. His plantation was known as Pilgrimage Plantation, a communitarian center near Micanopy. By 1821 he had twenty-one European Jewish refugees. The plantation was largely destroyed in the Second Seminole War. He was opposed to slavery and spoke out for abolition. |
