He went to Gainesville in 1852 to study law and was admitted to the bar in 1857. He practiced there until 1861. When the Civil War broke out, he organized the first company of minute men in the state. It was later attached to the First Florida Regiment. MacDonnell then served on Jefferson Davis's staff for the rest of the war. After he returned to Gainesville, he was twice elected state attorney. He moved to Jacksonville in 1874, and war re-appointed as a state attorney in 1887. |
