After being arrested and charged with treason at age 16, he was sentenced to six years in prison. He was eventually sent to Spain. In Spain, he earned a degree in civil law in 1874. After travelling around europe, he moved to Mexico and became involved in journalism. In 1892, he formed the Cuban Revolutionary Party which supported liberating Cuba through armed conflict with Spain. In fall of 1894, he began organizing the spark of a revolution in Cuba from Fernandina. He stayed at the Florida house during this time. He died during the Battle of Dos Rios. He was buried by the Spanish in Santiago, Cuba. |
