- Born to a religious family - Lost her father at a young age - Went to school at the Sisters of St. Joseph - at a young age was quoted saying "I will be religious like my teacher, Sister Philomena." - entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph du Puy at the age of 19 - was said to have delicate health -asked to be able to go with the other nuns to America when the Jacksonville missionaries were being set up to teach newly freed black children -Was able to go to Jacksonville for some time, but in 1871 was sent, along with Sister Helen, to Fernandina at the request of Father Bertazzi, to help prepare the children for their first communtion. After the communion they were kept on for another year and a half to teach at the school. - They were recalled to Jacksonville the last week of June '72 - In August 1873, Sister Celinie's health declined, when it was finally descovered how poor she was they sent her back to France to recoup - She recovered and came back to Florida with Sisters Noelie, Xavier, and Leonide - She was called again to leave Jacksonville and head to Fernandina, permanently - in October 1874, she was Mother Superior and was tasked to open a convent and school in Fernandina - in August 1877 she was with fellow sisters in St. Augustine for a retreat when Yellow Fever broke out in Fernandina, they were called back to treat the sick and dying - Mother Celinie was quoted saying "I feel that I shall not see you anymore" to Mother Sidonia before leaving - Over the next couple of weeks the sisters cared for and treated their patients. Mother Celenie worked even while showing symptoms of the fever. - When she could work no longer, she found her way back to the convent alone and passed quietly. - She died at age 33 |
