On October 2, 1898 the Great Storm made landfall on Cumberland Island as a category 4 hurricane. Winds are estimated to have been 135 mph encompassing a 20 mile radius, though the effects of the storm were felt along the GA coast. Brunswick and Darien GA were hit hard, with around a million dollars in damage.
