Photo series from Thanksgiving Day 1977 (November 24, 1977) when the Gilberto landed on Fernandina Beach with 27 tons of marijuana for its cargo. The boat hit the jetties. Boat owners set bales of marijuana on fire to destroy the evidence. The fuel tank on the boat exploded, spreading marijuana over a great distance of the beach. Fernandina Beach Fire Department (FBFD) was called to the scene to put out the fire. Fernandina Beach Police Department (FBPD) was also dispatched, along with Nassau County Sheriff's Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigations. Sheriff Brooks, Bobby Moore and others responded. Some of the photos were taken by James T. Fender (Jimmie) and others by John J. Cecchini, a professional photographer.
