| Description | Fort Warren was a Union fort in Boston Harbor.  Southern blockade runners were captured during the War between the States and confined in Fort Warren for the duration of the War. George Davis' grandfather, George Washington Davis, is in center of this picture in the beaver hat and black beard. Note guard is giving soldier a letter from home. Sitting left in light pants is Cornelius Smith, a Cape Fear pilot. (George's grandmother 's brother was from Southport NC). The Pictures were brought to Fernandina from Southport. Also in picture is Miss Fanny Horsey's father (Pat Huntley Klarer's great grandfather) whose name was Johnston; he is sick and wearing a shawl. He later died in prison. (His body was returned to Fernandina Beach in 2002. See vertical file: Johnston) The man with the towel around his shoulders is Mr. Hopkins, grandfather of Marion Davis. He may have died in prison. (Information about Hopkins is from Lucile Davis Arrowsmith, daughter of Jones and Lucy Davis.) |
