Description |
This goliath grouper, or giant sea bass or jewfish, was caught by Lynn Joyner, of Fernandina Beach. He caught it on the dock known as the Ice Dock on the Amelia River where the current Ocean Port Authority resides. The fish weighed 680 lbs. and was 7 ft., 1.5 in. in length. Its girth was 77 inches. Two friends lassoed the fish; it was hoisted from the water using a wrecker from Main Beach. The Container Corporation of America (or Rayonier) scale was used to weight the fish. An article appeared in the News Leader. It is an International Game Fish Commission world record for both all tackle and 80 lb. test. It is the largest species ever landed on a rod and reel. The 130 lb. Joyner battled for 1 hour and 15 minutes. He is one of the youngest anglers to land a fish anywhere near that size. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Joyner of Fernandina Beach. |
