Description |
161 pieces of St. Johns Plain pottery from the Coe site southwest of the Plaza in Old Town numbered 1.001-1.061. These pieces include rim and body sherds. This pottery dates from 850 to 1200 AD during the Mississippi period. The four pieces shown here are among the largest pieces and show some of the best surface markings. The exteriors have rough, hard-tooled surfaces. One piece (1.057) has been pieced together from 3 sherds and suggests a pot of about 16" in diameter. One of the largest pieces shows a plain, flat lipped rim. The smallest pieces in the set are less than one inch. The second photo shows 7 pieces of St. Johns Plain body sherds with burnished exteriors (2.001-2.007). The largest is about 2 inches and the smallest less than one inch. The Coe site is striking for the high incidence of Ocmulgee pottery, which is 33% of the overall collection (Old Town, New Perspectives: Discovering the Native American on Amelia Island, paper presented at the 64th Annual Florida Anthropological Society, May 12, 2012). |
