September 1976 issue of the Treasure. Includes article detailing 16 gold bars that were supposedly discovered in Fernandina Beach. Exerpt: "...Two employees of Glayco, an R. E.Thomas subsidiary, were digging with a back hoe a mile from the intercoastal waterway in preperation for the expansion of a county health facility. First indication of the "find" was when the back hoe struck a cylindrical brass object, which, on closer examination, yeilded the 250 pounds of gold bullion. Found in the three-foot-deep pit along with the gold were human bones, and a number of old bottles which have been valued at between $400 and $600 each. Samples of the bullion were taken to a jeweler who verified that the material was indeed gold. The bullion is being analyzed by Florida State University where the Nassau County Superior Court ordered an examination. "Apparanetly someone melted the gold down," said Thomas, "because it was not in a uniform casting." The 16 gold bars were placed in the brass cylinder which has been dated at around 1850..." |
