Object Name |
Bilbo |
Description |
Possibly a pair of iron 'Bilbo' shackles. One large and one smaller set of what appears to be Bilbo schackles. Bilbo shackles were a kind of restraint used in the 18-19th centuries. These types of shackles were most notably used by slave ships to restrain captives and individuals when they first got on the vessel. Typically, the bilboes were removed or exchanged for another kind of restraint during the extent of the voyage. However, if the individual was deemed likely to try to escape or initiate a revolt, there is some evidence that the bilboes were used to immobilize a person for the entire voyage. Bilboes include leg or arm, sometimes neck, shackles that are attached to a bar. Several shackles could be linked together to further prohibit mobility, and link multiple enslaved individuals together. |
