The Florida Mirror Wednesday July 2, 1898. There is an article on new electric machines used during the Spanish American ar in Cuba. One on them is an illustration of a Army Searchlight, a traveling postoffice cart and illustration on how photo technology is used on the battlefield. There is an article in the newspaper about navigation regulations in Fernandina port during times of war. It includes times allowed to leave port. It has regulations about being near Fort Clinch, submarine regulations. There is an article from the Atlantic Journal about the thoughts and apprehenssion to go into the Philippines that comes from Navy Admiral George Dewey and incudes statistics on the situation in the Philippines compared to the fight in Cuba. There is a announcement for the 4th of July celebration in 1898 in Jacksonville. This newspaper is filled with different advertisments, many are local buisnesses. One of them is Fred W. Hoyt & Co. that shows a engraved drawing of woman in a dress promoting good coffee. There is a story about a nurse named Miss. F. in Cincinnati Ohio but it talls about how nurses treated the sick in the era. There is an advertisment for the White Sewing Machine Company in Cleveland Ohio showing an illustration of a White sewing machine similar to the same kind the Amelia Island Museum of History has. There is an interesting fact for coin collectors during this era when this newspaper was released that for coin collectors the most valuable American coin was a 1804 Silver dollar. The price went for £200.00 to £240.00 back in 1898. It says only 13 are known to exist. There is an announcement from the F.C. & P railroad special rates on tickets. One in particular that stands out is for a Confederate Veterans Annual Re-Union that will take place in Atlanta Georgia. It advertises $7.00 for train tickets round trip from Fernandina to Atlanta for the reunion. There is a notice in the paper saying that the Captain nor consignees of the British ships Eclipse and Newstead will not be responsible for debts contracted by the crew while in the port of Fernandina as of June 20, 1898. There is an addvertisment for Remembering the Maine and the events that led to war and send 10 cents to manufactures for material and full instructions in Brooklyn, New York. There is a detailed article on a announcement for the Democratic Convention that occuredin Orlando on August 3, 1898. it covers what the convention will vote on canidates and issues and which counties are entitled for represented.
