The Fernandina News-Record Friday, July 2, 1915 There is story of a car accident happening in Jacksonville on Sunday June 27, 1915. Morris Ground and Jerry Googe were returning home from Jacksonville in Mr. Grounds automobile. Mr. Googe received a fracture of the hip, severe cut to the cheek and bruises while Mr. Ground came out with devere jolting from the car accident. (page 1) There is a story of a family reunion for the Higginbotham family on June 18, 1915. It mentions that the Higginbotham family may be one of the oldest families in Florida and maybe the oldest in Nassau county. The reunion occurred at the Hilliard Inn hotel put up several years prior to when this newspaper was published. The article covers some of the known family history of the time. Some of the names mentioned in the article include Mr. Thomas William Higginbotham, Margery Murrhee Higginbotham, Miss Emma M. King, Ella Price, Condry Clinton. The article goes into more depth of the family names and history. (Page 1) There is a story of a dance happening at the Keystone hotel on Saturday June 26, 1915. It gives a list of names in attendance at this party. (Page 1) The second meeting of the chamber of commerce was held Friday June 25, 1915. The meeting covered more details for the grand opening of Amelia Beach resort for Thursday July 15th. It says that there will be a great deal of races, prizes will be offered. They will have car, motorcycle, and foot races.(Page 1) There is two sports stories on the front cover of the newspaper. One is the Juniors playing a baseball game in Kingsland Georgia. The other story is Fernandina losing to Green Cove Springs. (page 1) There is a proclamation that since July 4th falls on a Sunday on July 4, 1915 that it requests all businesses be closed for Monday July 5th in order to observe July 4th. (page 1) There is a report from Washington D.C. about the failed negotiations with German Foreign office over the refusal to reconsider to settle by direct diplomatic negotiations over transportation of contraband supplies from June 24, 1915. It does say that Germany has admitted liability for the sinking of the Frye under the treaty of 1828. (Page 2) There is a story that the doctor ordered complete rest for President Wilson and was going on a brief vacation at the summer White House in Cornish, New Hampshire to determine how to deal with the Mexican and European conflicts. The article talks about current events going on as far as negotiating with different nations about what was going on in the world. (page 2) There is a story of several Mexicans along with General Orozco being detained in El Paso, Texas due to nearly 3 months of espionage. They were engaged in recruiting men across the boarder, violating neutrality laws, purchasing supplies towards their revolution against the United States. General Victoriano Huerta was placed under arrest in Newman, New Mexico. Huerto was released under a $15,000.00 bond and Orozco on a $7,500.00 bond. (page 2) There is a story that French government passed a bill unanimously appropriating 5,600,000,000 francs (or $1,130,000,000.00 dollars) to help cover government expenses for 3 months starting on July 1, 1915. The French minister mentioned in a speech before this bill was passed that "he recolonized the necessity of France buying as little abroad for the requirements of war as possible." (page 2) There is a story of a Ponce de Leon post office being robbed of $40.00 to $50.00 as well as 1,000 pennies. The burglars were caught. They left the stamps unmolested. (page 2) There is a story describing some of the major damage from a fire in the town of Wauchula, Florida. (page 2) An article about the spread of awareness on Tuberculosis and how to prevent it is located on page 3. There is a story in a section called "Changing the European Map" providing examples of how students are learning the map and misconceptions of boarders and nations during World War I and provides examples of how the students are answering the teacher's questions in geography classes. (page 3) There is a promotion describing what the grand opening of Amelia Beach will be like on November 15, 1915. The big things opening are the new trolley cars, new bath houses, new board walks, new pavilions. (page 4) There is a paragraph distinguishing fame from riches on page 4. There is a brief segment on the left column of the newspaper saying "England wants a five billion dollar loan and she's sure to get it. We want that dollar you owe us and would like to have it. Will we be sure to get it?" (page 4) This statement is referring to the debt the United Kingdom has for paying for the war effort in The Great War or also known as World War I. There is a notice that "the School Board will accept bids until noon on the 14th pf July, 1915 for building an auditorium at Callahan. Plans and specifications can be seen at 0. 0. Mickler's store at Callahan or the School Board's office. (page 5) There is a article describing and shows an illustration of women's fashion of the era. One illustration is a woman wearing a white de chine dress. it has feathers for the head piece, a flower for the middle of the dress. (page 5) The article comes from Lillian E. Young from the Washington Post. There is a story saying "For Exchange-- A light one-horse wagon in good condition. Will trade for good milk cow.-- W. J. Lohman." (page 5) There is a snippet (on the bottom of page 5) reporting that "Anthony D. Brady has accepted a position in Horsey's Drug Store." He started working there on the morning of Thursday July 1, 1915. There is a segment titled "Wear Better" promoting muslin will help your mattress and pillows wear and look better. (page 5) There is a story and illustrations of women's fashion of the day for different occasions on (Page 6). The paper includes illustrations of a purse and a woman's evening frock and underskirt with chiffon finish. There is a lengthy story on horses and how they can be important to Europe both during and post war effort in Europe to deal with agriculture. Part of the purpose of this article is to inform farmers where to invest in horses for the future. Many nations dealt with enormous losses in horses from war. (page 7) There is a story on sodium silicate or known as water glass and how it helps preserve eggs. (page 7) There is a detailed financial county report of expenses and general funds that includes 6 months till December 31, 1914. (page 8) There is a story at the First Colored Baptist Church in the B.Y.P.U service that the church presented Reverend and Mrs. Hawkins with beautiful tailor-made suits There is an announcement that the First Colored Baptist Church will lay its Cornerstone on Monday July 5, 1915 at 10:00 AM. (page 8) There is an announcement for where and when to vote in Nassau county for the Primary Election. The hours are 8:00 AM-sunset on Tuesday July 6, 1915. (Page 3) D.Swift & Company located at 303 7th street or in Washington D.C. (Page 3) - Dr. J.R. Lynn Dentist in Jeffreys Building office phone 43 or 140 (Page 3) - L. Grunwald Optometrist & Master Optician (page 3) - Dr. Leroy McMurray Dentist in the Swann building (page 3) - Maxwell House Coffee (page 3) - Bicycles, Locks, Keys, etc. repaired at No 10 South 3rd street.
