In May 1777, enlisted as a corporal in the Continental Army in the Huntington's 1st Connecticut regiment. Spent the winter of 1777 in Valley Forge. On June 28, 1778, was wounded at the Battle of Monmouth with a leg injury that made him unfit for field service. After this, he transferred to the Marines where he served on the frigate "Confederacy" from Oct 1778-Aug 1781. By 1808, he had 200 acres of land on the southern bank of the Satilla River in Camden County, Georgia. From 1829-1838, he was the lighthouse keeper on Cumberland Island, Georgia. After the lighthouse was moved to Amelia Island, he continued to man the lighthouse until his death in 1842. He was interred on the grounds of the Amelia Island Lighthouse until he and his wife were re-interred in Bosque Bello. He recieved $96 a month from his Revolutionay War Pension. His birth date given on his pension application (1761) is two years later than the date fount in Connecticut records (1759). |

Markers for Amos Latham, the first keeper of Amelia Light, and his wife, Jane, in Bosque Bello Cemetery adjoining Old Town. The Lathams were first buried at the base of the lighthouse but were re-buried in Bisque Bello in recent years by a descendant when a road was planned which would traverse their graves.
