Joined the Royal Navy in 1803 at age 16. He later transferred to the Army and became a Captain. He served in Spain, where he was given the rank of Colonel and the title of "Sir" from the Spanish Cavalry. In 1811 he travelled to Caracas and joined the revolution against Spanish colonial authorities. He married Josefa Lovera Bolivar. He was appointed brigadier general of the Patriot's northern army in 1813. In June of 1817, MacGregor took control of Amelia Island from the Spanish and raised the Green Cross of Florida flag. However, MacGregor's forces dwindled after money from investors in the enterprise failed to materialize. He left Amelia 68 days after conquering it. |
